The State Of Our Union, As We Have Been Told

We are led to believe the economy is improving as economists race to increase their growth forecasts.  Even members of the Fed are calling for 4% GDP growth in 2011.  Yet in the face of monetary policy still at emergency levels and trillions spent in stimulus our economy is dependent on yet another $600 Billion USD.  How can this be when...

  • We are told inflation is not present yet we see it at the grocery store, the gas station, heating our homes.
  • We are told unemployment is improving yet we cannot produce the 160,000 monthly jobs associated with population growth.
  • We are told corporate profits are growing yet we add over 400,000 in new jobless claims each week.
  • We are told housing is improving yet one in seven are in some form of default.
  • We are told we have freedom of speech, yet websites have been shutdown without due process.
  • We are told the consumer is strong yet over 40 million Americans are on food stamps.
  • We are told banks are extending credit, yet their balance sheets are shrinking.
  • We are told justice will prevail, yet no one has been convicted from the financial crisis.
  • We are told failure to raise the debt ceiling will cause a default, yet we issue forty cents in debt for every dollar spent.

I have one simple question for those who tell us all of this.

What do we tell our children?

"The more we do to you the less you seem to believe we are doing it"

Dr. Josef Mengele, a German SS officer and a physician in the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. He gained notoriety chiefly for being one of the SS physicians who supervised the selection of arriving transports of prisoners, determining who was to be killed and who was to become a forced labourer, and for performing human experiments on camp inmates, amongst whom Mengele was known as the Angel of Death.
